The terms “inappropriate... challenging... difficult... problem etc” are often used to describe behaviour that we (parents/society/peers) deem to be unacceptable. All the things you like

Recently I wrote a list of all the things in life that I like and dislike. This was not a purely self indulgent exercise; I did have a reason for doing it. Obviously I found it quite fun and quite easy to come up with a long list of things from foods to sports and from books to scents. What I ended up with was a list of items and activities that I am highly motivated by, things I love to have, things i love to learn about and things i love to share. Compiling a list, or Motivation Profile, is one of the first things we do at NETwork Interventions when we meet a new client. It gives us an idea of what they are all about, what we can use to reinforce desirable behaviour with and what sorts of teaching processes are going to work best. It is a simple tool and one that is always changing and expanding, motivation is never static. Read more...
